ABSTRACT
Domestic tourism plays a vital role in the economic development nations. This study explored the
relationship between domestic tourism and economic development in Plateau State. Data was collected
through surveys conducted among domestic tourists visiting Plateau State, and key stakeholders in the
tourism industry. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis
techniques. The findings of the study indicate that domestic tourism has significant positive impact on
economic development of Plateau State. The tourism sector contributes to employment generation,
income redistribution, and growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. Additionally, domestic tourism
stimulates local economies by generating revenue through accommodation, transportation, food, and other
tourism-related services. The study concludes that domestic tourism has the potential to significantly
contribute to economic development of Plateau State. To harness this potential, it is crucial to address the
identified challenges and implement appropriate strategies to promote and develop domestic tourism in
the region. By doing so, Plateau State can diversify its economy, create employment opportunities, and
improve the standard of living for its residents while preserving it’s cultural and natural heritage.
